The 15-year-old Amanda Todd was driven to suicide after she was cyber-bullied into flashing her chest. After posting a YouTube video describing how her social life was affected by this, she committed suicide on Oct. 10in her home town of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.
Anonymous launched #OpRIP to track down the cyber stalker and released a PasteBin post naming Kody Maxson, a 30-year-old man from British Columbia, as the culprit. Todd said she was blackmailed into performing a sexual show and when she refused, the cyberbully threatened to release the topless photo online, for her friends and family to see.
“This is the pedophile that social engineered Amanda Todd into supplying him nude pictures,” said the Anonymous post.
Although authorities are investigating the teen’s death, Cpl. Jamie Chung of the Port Coquitlam Royal Canadian Mounted Police said “the teen’s death was not suspicious in nature†and there’s no evidence of “foul playâ€.
The video Todd released contained details on how the leaked photo affected her life and how she picked up drugs and alcohol because of social ridicule. Changing schools and being called names pushed her into depression and anxiety disorders.
“I then got really sick and got anxiety, major depression and panic disorders,†she said. “I then moved and got into drugs and alcohol.â€
Canadian authorities are investigating the circumstances of her death, following the Anonymous post.
