The former owner of the “Revenge Porn†website and an alleged accomplice were detained on Thursday on charges of conspiracy, seven counts of aggravated identity theft and seven counts of unauthorized access to protected computers.
Former web site owner Hunter Moore, 27, is accused of having paid accomplice Charles Evens to break into hundreds of e-mail accounts to steal nude explicit pictures and display them online, on the IsAnyoneUp.com website with the purpose of revenge. If found guilty, the two risk decades in prison.
Evens allegedly managed to compromise hundreds of e-mail accounts through old-fashioned trickery rather than more technical means. “Generally, it was by social engineering.” Assistant US Attorney Wendy Wu told Ars. “Basically, he was impersonating these victims’ friends and was able to get confidential information that would allow him to access their accounts.”
Hunter Moore earned money from posting on his website nude pictures to spite or bully people. The millions of page views a month generated him tens of thousands of dollars from ads. The website was shut down in mid 2012.
