Acting President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump have received declassified intelligence reports about Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election. The reports came with an appended memo with unverified compromising information about Trump’s close knit personal and financial relationship with Russian businessmen and intelligence officers, Reuters reported.
The memos, put together by a “former British intelligence operative,” claim Russian intelligence has been gathering information on Trump for years. The memos accuse Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and Trump advisers Paul Manafort and Carter Page of having “met with Kremlin officials to orchestrate the release of documents hacked from American political organizations,” according to TechCrunch.
The leaked documents accuse Trump of exchanging information with Russian intelligence for the past eight years.
Mid 2016, Cohn allegedly traveled to Prague with three others and “engaged with Russians in trying to cover up scandal of MANAFORT and exposure of PAGE and meets Kremlin officials secretly in the EU in August in pursuit of this goal,” the report states.
Cohn stated on Twitter that he has never been to Prague.
“TRUMP’s associate reported that the aim of leaking the DNC e-mails to WikiLeaks during the Democratic Convention had been to swing supporters of Bernie SANDERS away from Hillary CLINTON and across to TRUMP,” one memo reads. “These voters were perceived as activist and anti-status quo and anti-establishment and in that regard sharing many features with the TRUMP campaign, including a visceral dislike of Hillary CLINTON. This objective had been conceived and promoted, inter alia, by TRUMP’s foreign policy adviser Carter PAGE who had discussed it directly with the ethnic Russian associate.”
Donald Trump’s team has not issued a statement, although the President-elect tweeted that the reports are “fake news – a total political witch hunt.”
The FBI has made no comment.
The information presented by Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, FBI Director James Comey, Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan and National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers is being distributed among intelligence agencies, members of Congress and other officials for further investigation.
